Iowa enacted constitutional carry in 2021 under Senate File 535, allowing law-abiding residents who are legally permitted to possess a firearm to carry it openly or concealed without a state-issued permit. Iowa imposes no state-level restrictions on the purchase or possession of standard rimfire or handgun ammunition. Buyers must be at least 21 years of age to purchase handgun ammunition and 18 years of age to purchase long gun and rimfire ammunition under federal law. Iowa has no state-level magazine capacity restrictions, assault weapons ban, or additional ammunition purchase requirements beyond federal law.
Iowa hunters using CCI rimfire ammunition for small game including squirrel and rabbit should consult the Iowa DNR for current regulations on legal calibers, season dates, and equipment requirements for their specific hunting area. CCI rimfire loads are a legal and widely used choice for Iowa small game hunting at appropriate distances, and the brand’s .17 HMR and .22 WMR offerings extend effective range meaningfully for hunters who need reach beyond typical .22 LR distances. Contact VanTon Arms for help selecting the right CCI load for your specific Iowa small game hunting or range training application.

CCI Ammunition is one of the most respected and widely used American ammunition manufacturers, known above all for producing rimfire ammunition with industry-leading ignition reliability and consistent velocity. The brand is particularly recognized for the CCI Mini-Mag, the gold standard for .22 LR reliability across decades of American shooting, the Stinger high-velocity .22 LR that delivers the highest velocities available in the rimfire format, and the Blazer Brass and Blazer Aluminum centerfire value lines that bring CCI’s quality primer technology to affordable range training ammunition. CCI’s primers are also sold separately and are widely regarded as the most reliable primers available for handloaders.
The CCI Mini-Mag is a .22 LR load that has become the benchmark for rimfire reliability over decades of consistent performance in semi-automatic pistols, bolt action rifles, and semi-automatic rifles across every shooting discipline. Its consistent case dimensions, reliable primer compound, and quality bullet construction produce the ignition reliability and cycling performance that makes it the top recommendation for .22 LR semi-automatic platforms where reliable cycling depends on consistent ammunition. For Iowa shooters running a Ruger 10/22, a semi-automatic .22 LR pistol, or any other rimfire platform where reliability matters, the CCI Mini-Mag is the established standard choice.
VanTon Arms carries CCI rimfire hunting loads suited for Iowa small game hunting including quality hollow point .22 LR loads for squirrel and rabbit hunting, .22 WMR loads that extend effective range and terminal performance for hunters who want more reach than standard .22 LR provides, and .17 HMR loads that deliver a flat, fast trajectory well suited for varmint and small game at distances where .22 LR is marginal. CCI’s segmented hollow point .22 LR is a popular hunting choice for its reliable fragmentation on small game. Always consult the Iowa DNR for current small game season dates and regulations before heading afield.
The CCI Stinger is a high-velocity .22 LR load that delivers significantly higher muzzle velocity than standard .22 LR ammunition through a combination of a lighter bullet and a slightly longer case with more propellant, producing the fastest velocities available in the rimfire format. The Stinger’s higher velocity translates to a flatter trajectory at field distances and more reliable hollow point expansion on small game compared to standard velocity loads. The longer case means the Stinger does not fit all .22 LR chambers, so confirming your specific firearm’s compatibility is recommended before running it in a semi-automatic or bolt action platform not listed as Stinger-compatible by the manufacturer.
CCI Blazer is a value-line centerfire handgun ammunition offered in brass-case and aluminum-case configurations across popular pistol calibers including 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and others. Blazer Brass uses standard reloadable brass cases and quality CCI primers, making it one of the most popular and trusted range training loads among Iowa handgun shooters who want reliable performance at a competitive cost per round. Blazer Aluminum uses non-reloadable aluminum cases at a slightly lower price point for shooters who do not reload. Both are well suited for high-volume range training where consistent function and reliable ignition are priorities.
Yes. CCI produces quiet and subsonic .22 LR loads designed to significantly reduce the report of a .22 LR firearm, making them popular for backyard pest control, small game hunting in noise-sensitive areas, and shooters who want reduced noise at the range without the cost and NFA process of a suppressor. CCI’s Quiet .22 and CB Cap lines produce a report similar to an air rifle in appropriate firearms. These loads may not cycle semi-automatic actions reliably due to their reduced operating pressure, making them best suited for bolt action and single shot platforms. Contact VanTon Arms for current CCI quiet load inventory and compatibility guidance.
No. CCI rimfire and handgun ammunition is a non-regulated product under both federal and Iowa law and does not require a background check to purchase. Federal law requires buyers to be at least 21 years of age to purchase handgun ammunition and at least 18 years of age to purchase rimfire and long gun ammunition. Iowa has no state-level ammunition purchase restrictions or registration requirements beyond federal law. Contact VanTon Arms for help selecting the right CCI load for your specific caliber and Iowa small game hunting or range training application.
